SCMS 6th Graders Sweep VFW Post 2657 Essay Contest
MOKANE - Annually, more than 60,600 students in sixth through eighth grades enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen® youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of nearly $1 million in state and national awards. Each first place state winner receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national first place winner wins $5,000!
This year VFW Post 2657 and the VFW Post 2657 Auxiliary presented the top local awards to three South Callaway R-II Middle School students all of whom attend Mrs. Michelle AuBuchon's 6th grade English Language Arts class.
Post Vice Commander and contest chairman Jay Hitchcock was on hand to convey the awards in person on Wednesday in a special assembly called to honor these student writers and their accomplishment. Haley Horstman won third place worth $80; Shyanne Renner won the second place award of $180. Top honors for first place went to Greysan Good, who received a check for $250.
The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. This year's theme was: "My Voice in America's Democracy?"
